Cathodic corrosion inhibitors protect metal surfaces by slowing or blocking the cathodic reactions involved in the corrosion process, such as oxygen reduction and hydrogen evolution. By reducing the availability of reactants at cathodic sites or forming protective deposits on the metal surface, these inhibitors significantly lower overall corrosion rates.

Unlike anodic inhibitors, cathodic inhibitors are generally more forgiving in dosage and operating conditions, making them well suited for systems where precise chemical control is difficult or where conditions fluctuate.
